Drew’s Day
September 23rd, 2023
16th Annual 5K Run, Walk, Stroll & Roll

Drew’s Day raises awareness and support for the Mountaineer Spina Bifida Camp and is dedicated to the memory of Andrew Humphreys. The event’s proceeds make it possible for West Virginia children born with Spina Bifida to attend the camp.

About
Drew’s Day

Our goal for the event, is to make it possible for all children that have Spina Bifida in West Virginia, to be able to attend Mountaineer Spina Bifida Camp.

Andrew “Drew” Humphreys battled his whole life with Spina Bifida. He was a strong member of the community and he benefited from The Mountaineer Spina Bifida Camp. Drew attended the camp for ten years where he developed self-esteem, social skills, and self-reliance while he participated in recreational and social activities. Drew passed away due to complications of Spina Bifida, and Drew’s Day was created in his memory by Alyssa Lawson, a classmate and family friend. The proceeds from Drew’s Day provide scholarships for West Virginia children born with Spina Bifida and make it possible for them to attend the camp. Mountaineer Spina Bifida Camp was Drew’s, and other campers who have since passed away, favorite place to be. We would love to see these children have the opportunity and joy to make life-long memories and friends.

Mountaineer Spina Bifida Camp was founded upon the belief that there should be a place where the children around West Virginia, with Spina Bifida, could meet with their peers and not feel secluded or different. The camp is held each year at Cedar Lakes in Ripley, WV. Campers participate in various activities such as: swimming, wheelchair hockey and baseball, crafts, campfires, fishing, and even a prom. The camp is run solely on monies from companies and private donations. Campers are only charged a small, flexible fee based on the family’s income. The biggest expense for the camp is insurance. With supplies, room + board, food, and insurance, the total expense per camper is about $1,000.
