About Drew’s Day

An Event to Celebrate a Life & to Benefit Children That Were Born With Spina Bifida

Andrew "Drew" Humphreys

  • Andrew "Drew" Humphreys, a wonderful young man, who battled his whole life with Spina Bifida was a strong member of the community and benefited from The Mountaineer Spina Bifida Camp. Drew attended the camp for ten years. There, he developed self-esteem, social skills, and self-reliance while he participated in recreational and social activities.

  • Drew passed away due to complications of Spina Bifida, and Drew's Day was created in his memory by Alyssa Lawson, a classmate and family friend. Drew's Day is an annual event whose proceeds provide scholarships for West Virginia children born with Spina Bifida. The cost for Mountaineer Spina Bifida Camp per camper is about $1,000 and this money helps provide time at camp for Spina Bifida children.

  • Our goal for the race, is to make it possible for all children with Spina Bifida in the state, to be able to attend camp if they so desire. It was Drew’s favorite place to be (and also other campers who have since passed away). We would love to see these children have the opportunity and joy to make life-long memories and friends.

Andrew loved to help others and we ask you to help support Drew's Day today by registering for this year's event

Mountaineer Spina Bifida Camp

  • Camp originated from the idea of doctors that treated children with Spina Bifida in the state of West Virginia. They felt that there should be a place where these children could go to meet with their peers and not feel out-of-place, or made to feel different.

Mountaineer Spina Bifida Camp was born from this idea and is held each year at Cedar Lakes in Ripley, WV. Children that have Spina Bifida from all over the state may attend and are able to swim, play wheelchair hockey and baseball, make crafts, have campfires, fishing, and they even have a prom where the campers get dressed for the evening and dance.

  • Camp is run solely on monies from companies and private donations. The campers are charged a small fee and that is on a sliding scale according to what the family is able to pay. Insurance is the biggest expense. With supplies, room and board, food and insurance, the total expense per camper is about $1,000.

In 2007, they were considering canceling camp due to lack of funds, but monies from the 2007 Drew’s Day 5K event kept it open! We raised almost $10,000 that first year, and the camp stayed open! In the past six years of Drew's Day, with the help of generous donors and race participants, we have raised about $70,000.

Our goal for the race, is to make it possible for all children that have Spina Bifida in the state, to be able to attend camp.
